What Athens yards are made of
Most of Athens is Decatur and Dewey series soil: a thin loam on top of deep red clay, with limestone near the surface on the east side. It drains fine where it was never disturbed. On a new lot where the topsoil was scraped and the clay packed down, it does not. Soil prep matters more than plant choice.
